My son has a 92 Blaster, the rear brakes have never been very good. Is there anyone out there that has had any success in getting these brakes to work better. or is my only hope to convert them to hydraulic.

I have a 93 Blaster and the rear brakes never worked good at all, they hardly even made the rear disc warm. My pads were in great condition so I knew it wasn't them. It had to have been the caliper, but when I took it out, I couldn't really see any problems. Someone told me that the FL250 Oddessy has the EXACT same insides as the Blaster and to my luck, I had an old oddessy laying around my farm. I swaped the insides and the rear brakes work fine. They don't work great but they lock the back wheels and thats what they were intended to do.

When looking at the rear brake caliper, make sure the "foot" (the thing that pushes on the brake pad) turns. If it is frozen and does not move, you can either put it in a vise and force it to move =) or just buy a new caliper. I would suggest buying a new caliper more than anything else because most of the time, the caliper is the problem. Hydro rears are good to have but they can get a bit pricy.

The Blaster rear brakes work fine. It's the adjustment of them that can be tricky. If you follow the instructions in the manual you may have to press the brake lever 20 to 30 times for the adjustment to take affect. It had me scratching my head for awhile. If the pedal goes all the way down and the calliper moves only slightly it means you did not press the lever enough times during the adjustment process.
My brakes work great, it's the adjustment mechanism that should have been better designed.
Yamaha made a big mistake. They should have put the Banshee hydraulic setup on the Blaster.

Try a more aggressive pad.
