Might be getting an LT250

I know this is a Yamaha forum but you guys are the best. My dad found a nice quadracer for $1200 but we might be able to get it for $1000. Dont know what yr it is, just that it runs and was recently rebuilt. Are these good quads? Any known problems I should look out for? Thanks guys!

Well, that question is like asking if vanilla ice cream is better than chocklate. I had a LT 250 quadracer it was an 85 model and it had some short comings. Like only about 5-7 inches of travel. Very nose heavy, and the 85 model only had 5 gears. The engines were pretty powerful as long as you could maintin them, but hey why are you even asking? If you can get any quad for around 1,000 bucks and it runs have way decent and isn't heavily damaged then what does it matter? For that kind of money you can't really put up an argument. Or maybe I should put it this way. Your not going to find many quads if any for that kind of cash. I would deffinately check for engine wear, and bearings and seals, frame breaks ect; IT's a very old machine you know...

This is the kind of stuff I want to find out, like what years are good and stuff. I know if I was looking for a Raptor I would stay away from an 01 and maybe an 02 cuz of the tranny/one-way. I heard something about a power valve being introduced in 86? Should I buy it if its an 86+ model? But your right, for $1000 its a good deal on whatever yr it is, I just want to avoid getting into a mess later on.

The 87 Is the first year to be a PV engine and it has the largest intake from what I have heard, I know that I paid ALOT less money than all these guys running new quads and I can still give em a run for their money in the dunes...

I had an '85 and sold it a month later. If it's prior to '87, it's really not worth it. Crappy suspension, axle housing and swingarm prone to cracks, not really that fast. For $1k, I'd buy a Warrior; a lot more reliable, parts readily available. If it's an '87+, GET IT! They are so much better.

This will be for my 15yr old brother. Hes pretty good and outgrew his trx300 4x2 and an old warrior we had. So now he will be riding the new/old quadrunner. I just hope it runs as good as they said
