Raptor Tranny Victim Needs Help
#1
Just Talked to my dealer, My 01' Raptor is in to install new Yoshimura exaust and K&N ProFlo, I also had him check out the intermitent slipping in all gears, also missed second gears, two techs rode it and both are thinking it is the tranny, the mech, has not riddin' it and is thinking the clutch, I have the Y.E.S. Warranty but the tech says if it is anything to do with shift forks, worn out dogs on gears it is going to be cash out of my pocket.... I have had the missed second gear since i bought it.... just dealt with it..... Has Anyone dealt with the dealer and been able to come out not feeling like they broke one off in your ***.... they quoted me over 900$ just in labor if it were something to do with the tranny..... Any Help would be appreciated.... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not totally missing 2nd just hits neutral rather than engaging into 2nd. Alot more than normal, Dealer said it sounds like my shift forks may be bent. or possibly the dogs on the gears are worn out or broken, Said The Y.E.S. plan would not help in that scenario. So pretty much saying it was a waste of my money to even get the warranty in the first place since Yamaha has to authorize any repairs over 350$. I should know more on monday or tuesday. Thanks.

Your going to be out money either way you look at it. Yamaha consideres a clutch part of wear (just like the chain, brake pads, ect...) so even if it is the clutch it still won't be covered.
Buy, or download, a repair manual and do it yourself. Between it and raptortranny.com and this forum you shouldn't have any trouble doing if you have much mechanical ability at all. The parts for the tranny swap (to make it right, not just half a$$ fix it like Yamaha probably would) are less than $600. A clutch is way less expensive and less complicated too.
Nice icon BTW, although I'm having a silver bullet right now, and welcome to the forums!

Missing 2nd gear sounds like the tranny is going out.....what happens is the shift fork starts to wear.....when the edge of the fork gets a little worn, it won't "grab" the way it's supposed to - or the shift drum could also be worn.....what will happen if you keep riding it like this is that one day one of the dogs on the gear will break off and jam up into your transmission - possibly doing even more damage. Unfortanately, I have seen alot of this!!! I used to work in Warranty for an ATV dealer.........
You should check out www.wellerracing.com - Jason is a Rappy whiz and he can do trannies in his sleep.......and he's VERY affordable. Also - if you can do it yourself, www.raptortranny.com is also an excellent site.....the best out there for tranny info!!!
Good luck you guys.....just upgrade to the '02 if you can.....those gears are made of a more durable material and so far our '02 conversion has held up great.........the '02 conversion isn't that expensive for what you are getting........
Hope you get it all taken care of!
