Im going to install a 12 tooth front sprocket on my raptor. I had to replace it anyhow because the stock 13 tooth was to worn down and my chain started to slip. I wanted to gear it down because I rarely have it going 5th gear wide open for long enough to reach the max speed. So going down one tooth up front will I lose alot of top speed? Will I notice more bottom end and acceleration?

yes, you will loose about 3-4 mph top speed but you will gain more low end power

When ever I was going through tight trails in the woods it felt geared to high.


When ever I race my friend with a DS we are usually pretty close, usually whoever has the better start has the upper hand. With my new sprocket I should beable to take him in a short drag right?

 

If your sprocket went bad, you need to check your rear sprocket and your chain. Also make sure you adjust it properly. You really should replace the rear sprocket and chain now with the new front.

The 12 tooth is a great upgrade and will make you very happy.

 

My dad is helping replace it and do the work, I asked him if we should switch both but he said my rear one is still good and that the chain should fit ok with the 12tooth and my stock rear sprocket. (how many teeth is on the stock rear sprocket?)

 

I n a perfect world you should change the all the peices at the same time. the parts all develope a wear pattern as they break and the eventually wear out. For optimum life out of all the parts you should change them. However since the front sprocket is so cheap compared tio all the parts combined together, and you say the rear has plenty of life left, I would with out a doubt just install a new front. Replace them all later when the more expensive ones wear out. Let me know how you like the sprocket, I want to do the same to mine for the same reasons. CL

 

If the front has been chewed up so much that it slips it has probably messed up the chain as well. And if the front is slipping then there is more strain on the rear.

You can get a new chain for 35 bucks, and IMO it is an important thing to do. Think preventative maintenance. What if your chain breaks now that it has been weakened? Hope that case saver is enough protection...

 

i did the opposite(moved from a 12 to a 14) and it was like I had an extra gear. I also didn't loose any bottom end power either, then again, i build my quad to rock and roll.

 

Well I put on the 12 tooth, and my chain wasnt worn that it wouldnt fit on my new sprocket....The only problem was that when it came to tightening the chain, we had to tighten it right to the end of the adjustements. So next time I have to tighten im going to have to make my chain smaller. There is no master link on my chain. How much is it for a master link for a stock raptor chain?
