What your asking is a very difficult job. I have a friend that could do it, but I'm sure he'd be cursing me the whole time he did the job, LOL. If you take it to a talented welder, he will have a hard time with it. If he's a hack, he'll ruin the tank. I'd suggest looking into other options such as JB weld or a new tank. JMHO.

Just had this problem with my oil tank in the same spot, the oil pickup. Just cracking led to a slow oil leak, faulty manufacturing on Yamaha's part, but my warrenty is overdue since it's a 2001. My dad is a welder, professionally for over 10 years, we have our own tig, mig, and laser Plasma CNC cutter, you name it. You can't risk welding it with the tig as it's too thin, he tried with this stuff you can weld on pop cans with, and due to it being continuously full of oil, you can't really clean it good enough. He slowed the leak down, but he couldn't seal it up due to the expansion rates on the metal. They are crappy tanks, if it gets sealed somehow, it will leak again. Invest the money and get a CFM tank off ebay like I did for $140. Best investment, my dad was amazed with the welds himself! It is one tough unit that will last forever unlike the UM tanks someone else mentioned on here. The heat shield is nice, but unfourtunately quality and capacity is more important to me so I went with CFM, and it was worth it and then some! Now because of that quality of product, I'm buying an air box for my Raptor, and oil tank and airbox for the YFZ as soon as I get it. Out of the many items I have on my Raptor that is one of the best made products on there! You want to run cooler, don't idle and increase the oil capacity like the CFM, holes will help, like in pingry's, I looked, but more oil cools better than what that air can do! Just keep moving, the air will keep it cool enough, better than stock anyhow!

ha! when I first glanced past this topic, I thought it said "wetting a bed". Makes sense after looking at it again.
