Default Cam break in procedure

What is your opinion on how to properly Break-in a NEW Stage 2 cam in a Yamaha Raptor? Not breaking in a new piston, thats already installed, so just cam, valves, valve springs. Thanks.

Don't let it idle and you will be fine. Take it out and ride it, but don't let it idle, it's very hard on the valve gear and cam if you do. I would not recomend running synthetic oil either. After 15 to 20 minutes your done.

They should of sent you instructions on how to break it in! You can't let it drop below 3,500 RPM but don't rev it, keep it as close to that RPM as much as possible for I believe 20 minutes to a half hour.

Also, check hotcams website, they should have instructions on there.

I'm installing a cam shortly and would like to know how do you tell it's at 3500 rpm for break in if I have no tach?

Take a good guess or go buy a tach like they have for doing sound tests. I just turned my idle screw up till it sounded like the engine was over 3,500 and let er rip for a half hour. You just gotta have an ear for knowing what RPM an engine is at I guess...

I'm in the same boat as lilmike. Hey Bigbubba, is it just as good to crank the idle screw up, or does there need to be a load on the engine?

as long as the engine is above the RPM range, it doesn't matter how you get it there as long as it's there. Personally I wouldn't risk not doing it like this, cams are expensive and so is repairing a broken engine.
