Help! Kodiak running bad and sucking down fuel...
#1
I have a friend with a 93 Kodiak 400 that is giving us grief. The thing consumes gas like crazy and does not like to run wide open while under load such as going up a hill. I have been through the carb a couple times and can’t seem to find anything wrong. It gets ridden between 6-9000 feet, has a 112.5 main jet in it, the needle has been moved down (clip up) and the choke has been checked. It runs fine up through mid range, its just when it’s wot.
FYI if you are under load climbing and hit the choke it dies right out, so I know its not a lean problem. The other thing that tells me its too rich is the fuel consumption. It will go through a tank in 25 miles. FYI there are no leaks either.
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance for any advice…

When my Wolverine was ready for a rebuild, it ran real rich, and used a lot of gas, check your compression to see if the motor is getting tired. Once I rebuilt it, it ran great, and stopped putting soot out the tail pipe.

Sounds like its too rich, try a smaller main jet, or remove the air box lid to let in more air.
Does it drip any gas out of the overflow tube, under the carb? Does it have black or grey smoke out of the exhaust? hows the spark plug look?
25 miles from one tank is outragous, unless youre in rugged country and are in low all the time.

It was initially leaking fuel out the overflow but I cleaned the carb and removed some gunk from the needle and seat. It does smoke a little black when you rev it up, but not too bad. The plug does turn black, but I don't dare go a whole lot smaller on the main jet. It came with a 120, I am at a 112.5 now. I may drop a 110 in it just to see, but I still have to wonder if its something else. It didn't use to run this bad.

If you are getting fuel out the overflow, either the float is way off, or the needle and seat needs to be replaced. My Wolverine did that, leaking, the needle and seat looked fine, had it pressure tested, leaked by. New needle and seat, problem solved. Leaking fuel by will definately cause you to run rich and use a lot of fuel.
