Alot is going to depend on the fat factor. I push 200 and run 13/44. My son goes 130 and runs stock gearing 13/40. Both will pull 3rd up the face. Just depends how fat you are, and horsepower.

when i was there i ran a 13/41 and it would pull 3rd but started to fall behind because it would not pick it up. I weigh about 210. I wasnt sure if i should go with a 14/41 to have a real tall 2nd or go with a 12/41 to pull 3rd.

Try a 13/42 or 13/44. I wiegh 200 and my bike is not a 686, it's a 673. But it pulls pretty good with a 13/44. I like the lower gearing out in the dunes, it holds alot better.

isnt a 12/40 like a 13/44? or is that 13/43? Im currently running a 12/40 but havent tested it on the mountain yet.. before with stock gearing i couldnt pull it in third but i could rape it in second..

For every 1 tooth you go down on the front, equals 3 on the back. By the way are you guys going out on Labor Day weekend?

I'll be up their on labor day along with a big group from wyoming. You can look at my pics and see what my bike looks like. Here is a cool web site thats breaks down the different sprokets and top speed of each gear. You can change the front or rear sprokets and see how it effects speeds. http://www.ljsoftware.com/Videos/Gea...alculator.html
