Grizz 03 CV joint
#1
My CV joint apparently went bad, but there is no damage to the boot. Has anyone else had this problem? 180 bucks just for the part!!!! I really need to know from others that own this machine if there are similar problems. Am I going to be replacing expensive parts all the time with the Grizz. I have been somewhat disappionted with its performance in water and mud. I don't do it often, but other people with supposedly less capable machines easily get through where my Grizz has issues and gets stuck. It rides great on the trails execpt for some tippiness, and I like it overall, but I just need to know if there are a lot of people that need repairs done on their machines. My dad's 1996 Honda Fourtrax 300 2X4 has had no problems at all. I guess I am wondering if my machine is not up to par with other Grizzly's somehow. Anyone have any feed back. Thanks for any comments.

hummer645, the only thing mechanically you have to worry about are those cv-joints..there is a guy a little while ago on the forum who replaced all but three and im assuming he went a replaced the fourth.im not sure but the 03grizz is the only model to have severe problems with this.. i have a 02grizz,no problems yet(knock on wood ).but from reading most people's post they have heavier tires which causes undo strain on the cv axle.but then again its yamaha fault for going to a thinner and probably cheaper material to make them and not informing buyers, who want bigger tires, about the rigidity of these cv-axles..I checked gorilla-axles,they are expensive($350 per axle for better quality).call your dealer and asked them how many have they replaced and make your decision then...but other than that i haven't had any mechanical problem other than the ones i caused...

One CV on my machine is making funny clicking sounds, but I had it checked and it is fine. I even looked at it myself. No lateral play or radial play. I think that some of them just end up weak for some strange reason. I have had no problems with mine at all. Even with 26" dirt devils. I would invest in better tires. The originals are junk. I know that it sucks but once you do it the tippiness will go away also. Get something like the dirt devils or mudbugs that have 6-plies. The side walls are a lot stiffer and it really stabilizes it in the turns. I almost never put my machine into 4wd because it will walk right through thick slimey deep woods mud without a problem. Don't give up yet. That thing is a monster, you just have to let the monster out.

At this time I have no mods, I plan on getting tires at some point, but I'll have to put that off for a little while do to a near $500 repair bill for the cv joint, new break pads, and some other maintainence. I am problably also buying another quad next spring so I won't be stickin to much $ into the Grizz just yet.

Search for my other strings on griz axle you will find the 03 griz eats them like candy. Keep your thumb off the diff lock for sure.

Yeah I have a 2003 Kodiak 400, no diff lock. I have a hole in my wheel end CV boot, which in turn has caused ticking in the joint from dust and mud holes. Now as soon as I started hearing the ticking, I found the hole and then have been pumping grease into it. The joint isn't gone yet, so I'm wondering if anyone has just replaced the CV boot and packed it with grease and not had a problem? OR Should I have to replace then entire shaft. You can't just replace the CV joint on this bike, you have to replace the shaft from the transfer case to the wheel. I'm in Canada and the part alone is $569!!!!! Then $55 an hour labour! So needless to say, I'm not getting it replaced any time soon. Does anyone know if you can just replace the joint without replacing the entire shaft. That is so stupid on the part of Yamaha to not make those parts seperate!! Thanks
