Installing rear brakes on a Warrior
#1
Hey all,
Tonight I tried to install new brakepads on my girlfriend's Warrior. I've been riding and wrenching on dirtikes for years, but I'm a total newbie when it comes to quads. Shouldn't make a difference though, brakes are brakes right?
Ok, so first I flushed all the old fluid out so there was no fluid in the system at all--it needed to be changed anyway. Then I unbolted the caliper, took the brake pins out, and took the old pads out. Now mind you, the piston moves freely with no trouble. So I push the piston in so I can install the new pads in the caliper. The piston does not push in flush with the caliper, there is still around maybe a hair over 1/8" or so still sticking out. I can barely squeeze both pads in. The pads are touching eachother, with no way to slide the caliper back over the rotor. Whats up? Like I said, the piston isn't stuck--it moves nice and smooth to a certain point, but its not quite enough to allow the room needed to slide it all back on the rotor.
Help!!!!
Thanks!!!!

welcome to the forums. Well in the left side of the caliper there should be a screw sticking out of the caliper its very notisable just give it a few turns and adjust it and the caliper will retract further.

What DS650baharunner is refering to is the parking brake adjuster, it is a 12mm bolt with a 12mm lock nut,it takes up the slack when your brakes wear, and pushes the piston out to keep the gap to the rotor constant. loosen the lock nut, back off the bolt until you can push the piston all the way in, then install, tighten the caliper down and turn the bolt in by hand until you feel it bottom out, then back of 1/8 to 1/4 turn and hold it with a wrench while you turn the lock nut down. Turn the wheel by hand to make sure it doesn't bind, and check the operation of the parking brake. You may need to tighten or loosen the parking brake adjuster a little, but then, you're ready to go !!

you think about a parking brake block off, they eliminate the pain in the azz problems with the paarking brake cable locking up, but then again you will have no parking brake, off course you could just do as I do on my blaster for a parking brake and use one of those velcro wrap type things around the front brake lever to lock the brakes when you need to.
