Get some wd-40 and a piece of wood. Lube the axle with the lube (both sides) and put the wood on the end of the axle (hub) and hammer back into place and then lube again and then hammer it out. You may have to do this a couple of times until the axle gets lube all the way through.

Wouldnt it still mess up the treads or the end though?

No. I just replaced my bearings. (i was in the same situation) If i were you I would put a socket on that wouldn't touch the threads of the axle and hit it with a sledge hammer. The axle wont get damaged if anything it might knock the bearings in the carrier a little loose so you can get them out easier. and P.S. good luck with the bearings if you need help or dont know how to do it put the carrier in a vice and pound away!!!

use a block of wood and hold it on the end of the axle,,,,and hit the wood with a small sledge

be sure to protect the threads

the reason i used a 22 is that is the size of the nut that holds the hub on (if i remeber correctly but its been awhile and my bike is miles away right now) just run the nut down as far as it will go and whale on it. (i left the hub on)
