Problem with 05 IRS Kodiak 450's
#61
Well,
I greased the two knuckles on the rear, and gotta tell you it was a pain getting that 90 degree fitting on and off, and getting it off was the hardest. I was worried I'd break it off, but everything went ok. I can't find the drive shaft fittings at all. You're talking to an idiot here, where exactly are they, on the drive shaft near the wheel, or on the interior? I see two drive shaft arms that go to the wheel on top and bottom, and they join just before reaching the wheel, and don't see any fittings. The "U" joint, is that where the two arms on each side of the wheel meet?
Thanks! I got extra grease fittings too, but none of them seem to fit over the knuckles. I got a package that is too small, I guess!

let me clearify....
a drive shaft with "U" joints is the one that comes from the engine/trans and goes to the front and rear differential (this is at the center beetwen the left and right tire), this one has 2 grease fitting (each shaft )
from the differential (this is the center pumpkin )
power is put through via drive shafts to the left and to the right wheel these have rubber boots (covering what is called CV (constant velocity) - joint ),
these are not suppose to be greased by the owner !!
it has grease from the factory , and not servicable or should not be messed with unless the rubber boot breaks
do not insert a needle type greaser into the rubber boot !!!!!
you will ruin it.
I hope this helps.
if you got more questions fire away, I am glad to help.

I don't even notice it any more , and not even sure it is there anymore !!!
we got the best ATV in the mid size class as of right now. 05 kodiak 450 that is.
enjoy it !!! instead of trying to find problems

I found the drive shaft fittings. Do I need to hit them now, as I only have a few miles on the ATV? I can see where the front will be harder to get to, and I'll need the needle attachment.

Doug - there are 4 zerks on the rear suspension, not two. Find the two you did and look directly above or below the CV boot in the same location. Also check the pics... Grease them as often as you can - when it's full, all it does is spit grease out the other side and force moisture/old grease out. Yes getting the right angle fitting (not a 90 degree fitting) off is slightly tough, I just yank on the grease gun hose and it comes off =]

I found two for EACH side, four altogether. I think I wasn't clear enough above.
I have yet another question though. I use 4 motorcycle buckle straps to tie it down using the eye bolts I installed in the metal angle frame, one strap for each corner. When I tighten the back of the ATV down, it pulls down on the suspension. Is this ok, or should I back it off some and let the back sit at normal height? If I back them off some and let it lift to the normal height it won't tie down as tight, but it won't ruin the shocks either.
How did that ride go you were writing about several days to a week ago?

congratulation on your new ride !!!
I am sure those 660s are torque monsters.
I am surprized your wife choose the bigger machine, over the little nimble kodiak......are you sure you did not influence her just a little bit, it is usually the man who is allways power hungry , looking at the machines in your sig. that may be just the case...
when you told her that the kodiaks ave all kinds of problems....... I hope you did not mean that the breaks squeek when new, than it goes away
