I had no problems when I welded a new flag mount on the sub-frame of my Z400. I did disconnect the battery though.....but not the CDI.

I quoted you because you stated you didnt unhook and didnt have a problem. I didnt unhook and I did. That was the comparison, and I was saying that I knew it was stupid for ME not to disconnect the battery...
No need to be confused, you understood me correctly. I didn't have any problems with my CDI when I welded my frame twice now. I'd still like to know how welding the frame can screw up a CDI. How/why did it mess up yours? Maybe I was just lucky and I should be disconnecting my CDI. Can anyone can give me a good example of how it will mess with the CDI? TIA
Your CDI box is comprised of electrical components, when you are welding on something, you are generating an enormous amount of current which can essentially zap your electronics.

Thanks, I'm still not sold. I know the CDI is grounded to the frame I'd think but so is the welder. I'm no electronics wizard either, LOL.

Geez Brian is your sig for real? I was laughing my azz off then I got to thinking about it, and it wasn't realy funny anymore.

i am an electronics guy..... and "sometimes" welding can cause failures in electronics, it also can cause wires to melt.... Some elctronics are more sensitive, like radios and stuff i work on.... but it also depends on how the electronics are wired... weird things happen, but when weding, there is a massive amount of current ... 30-175 AMPS depending on type of welding, and if the ground of the welder was on one side of the electronics from where you are welding, it has the potential to damage everything in its way...

Thanks, well, I guess I better start disconnecting the CDI next time I weld somthing on my quad. Better safe than sorry, or out $3-400.

I had my atv up on a steel stand so that may have attributed to a poor ground. Its important to ground as close to your weld as possible to prevent the charge from traveling through the frame.
