it shouldnt affect the idling or running of the quad. its like on a car if you get it jumped cuz battery is dead, the car runs fine

If you keep the voltmeter hooked up....after it starts, does it get to at least 12.8 volts? If you rev it to about 5000 rpm, does it get to 14. volts? If it does, then the battery isnt effecting the idle.
If a battery drops to below 10 volts while cranking...its on the way out. Have an auto parts store, do a load test on it.

Ok dang it...found the idle problem....The dam choke spring has rusted and was stuck open. Made sense, as soon as the engine was warm it started running like shii1iiiit, then I would give it a little gas it would make a flood out sound and die. That lt500 had a magneto ignition, almost all others have a battery/cdi/coil ignition...and they do need a battery to run.
