Also make sure you torque those head bolts to 20 ft lbs. Any more or less can cause more problems.

 

This is what i used as a compression tester, and those were my results. click me I am not sure if i did it right, or if that was the right tool, but i stuck the bottom in the hole where the spark plug goes, but the carberator was not on when i performed this, if that matters. I am not sure what measurment is the right one, but if you cant see it in the pic, it was 30psi or 210 kilopascals.

 

The compression tester screws into the spark plug hole, tight enough to seal, and then just kick start until you get your highest reading. Carb or exhaust pipe hook-ups don't matter because you are only measuring the combustion chamber sealing. If you did all this correctly and got 30psi, rebuild time. Hard to tell from your pic's, but the piston does look burnt and the top of the head has the burn residue on it. The burning is usually towards the exhaust side. Are you missing studs on your cylinder? Looks like 2 are out unless you took them out. But you need them to seal. See what other people here think too

 

You need to check the rings on the piston, if they are stuck in the grooves they will not seal, and by the looks of the top of the piston, something was in there, since you have it this far apart, you might as weel take the cylinder off, have someone measure it and the piston for proper clearance, buy a gasket set and hone the cylinder if it is in good shape, get a repair manual if you don't knwo what your doing, don't just guess at it.

The built up on the piston was probably just crappy oil.
When you did the compression check, did you put all the studs and bolts back into the head and torque them to exactly 20 lbs? If you didn't or had a leak then that explains why you only got 30psi.

 

You also need to hold the throttle open while doing the test, at 30 psi I doubt the engine would start.

did you get it running yet? if you didnt i would check the pet **** on the gas tank. it almost sounds like that could be plugged, because if you spray gas the the carburetor and it starts and runs for a few seconds it almost sounds like some gas pluggage somewhere.the right jets would probly help too.
