It really is stupid that my oldest son, who is fourteen years old and taller than I am, would have to ride a Yamaha Raptor 80 to be in compliance with guidelines for ATVs. Yet my youngest son, who is eight years old, can legally ride his KX 65 dirt bike and nobody even raises an eyebrow. Ever raced a KX 65 with a munchkin on it? When my Prairie 700 was stock I remember accelerating wide open down a paved road by our camp out in the desert of Arizona, and having my kid pass me with his KX 65 like I was sitting still. Dang those little buggers are fast for an eight year old to be riding. There sure is a double standard between bikes and quads.

This is just a legal thing. Consumer lawsuits really hurt this industry in the 80s from kids getting hurt on ATCs. If you are under the age of the label and get hurt on one, it takes the liablity off the manufacturer. The consumer can't pratically use it as an actual guidline.
