Default what happend????

If they got the wrist pin a little tight to begin with it will gall some and get hot; which will cause it to gall some more and on and on.............until up locks up or scuffs the **** out of the piston.
It should not make any difference but like the cam, the piston pin is splashed oiled. In my opinion you are doing it an injustice by breaking it in slow. The more oil you can get splashed on the pin the better. (Higher RPM) That's one of the reasons why cam makers don't want you to idle a new cam.
Detonation could also cause this. How much compression did they set it at and what kind of fuel did you run in it? There is not many things other than detonation that will cause a crack in a piston top.
i did not run it low on oil that is for sure and did not rap it out when cold. when i first rod it i rode through all the gears and at mod speeds for the first 1/2 hour just like the hot cam instrukions said and then road it normal for a nuthe 1/2 hour. the 2nd time i rode it was with my kids and that was probably alittle to slaw but it was about 57* out so i don't think it would get hot.
what is the rist pin?is that the piston pin { the pin that holds the piston to the rod}
i use 93 oct. gas and the piston was a westco 10.25 to 1 comp.

Sounds like you did everything right and they got the pin (piston pin) a bit tight. I hope they make it right for you. Good luck.
