Default Raptor vs yzf450

Where we ride at we have a drag strip set up. It's 900 ft long. On a nice Sunday afternoon there is 40-50 quads racing. The YFZs are king. They pull everything else out of the hole so bad they can't catch up. There are some 450rs and Predators that are running VERY close, but the Raptors are not a factor.

Seems pretty odd to me that a Raptor making an extra 14 hp can't keep up with YFZs making an extra 5-6 hp. That's why I don't think your gonna see that much hp gain from those mods on a Raptor.

PS...Expect more criticizing.

Buck
Good that you expect more criticizing, because when I see your post in a yfz vs whatever thread I expect plenty of instigation.

A reasonable estimate is 43hp for a piped and filtered raptor. About the same for a piped and filtered yfz. Yfz has a significant weight advantage and IMO is easier to launch in a drag race, at least in stock chassis and suspension form. Throw in the fact that you are more apt to see experienced and smaller riders on yfz's and larger and more recreational riders on a raptor and the real world comparison becomes a little biased. Add that most yfz pipes are capable of an extra 5 hp while most raptor pipes are limited to 8 which only evens the hp field, and that raptors are harder to jet so most are not running the correct A/F ratio. You have to get into Sparks, LTE, LRD, CT, or Barker (there may be one or two I've left out) if you want to break the 10 hp barrier and most atv owners dont want to spend 500-800 dollars for a pipe on a trail bike.

I could go on with other factors but you get the idea that just becuase your piped yfz and the ones you've seen can beat piped raptors doesnt mean that a raptor cant gain 12-15 hp from a pipe and filter.

poor raptor is going to loose sorry to tell you just because it is bigger does not mean it is faster. the only way you have a chance is if you way a lot less.

Good post Maddog. As are all of the posts I read of yours. Straight facts and nothing more.

As for me instigating. Give me a small break if you can. I generally don't reply unless on these threads unless stupidity rears it's ugly head in a bad way. You and I both know that this whole internet racing thing can be pretty funny at times. We've both seen bikes win in interent racing that have no chance of winning these races in the real world. That's usually when I step in to help the situation.

Don't hate me for bringing the truth out on occasion please????

All of these bikes we discuss are great bikes in thier own right. No one can deny that. I'm not stupid enough not to realize the fact that a Raptor will beat my YFZ in a top end race. But in the real world where all of us do these weekend shootouts, top end is rarely seen. I'm not stupid enough not to realize the fact that a Raptor is helluva lot more comfy than my Y. I could go on and on about the pros of the Raptor vs the Y. But you and I both know that the tables are reversed in situations where the Y shines. These are the areas that some of these 14 yr old interent racers don't want to see with their cybervision.

That is with a filter and jets! Maybe not a filter, but you can't just throw on a pipe and go and run right. It will be lean and burn up adventually. And if you read closely they show what jets they use for every pipe. I think it is on a chart. So I wouldn't be telling people to get there facts straight.

Buck, no malice intended in my post just a bit of friendly ribbing. I recall the yfz thread that went on for pages and pages and days and days a couple months ago, I belive you were a part of that one as well and I was just rekindling the fun we all had.

I agree with you that in the real world the yfz still tends to pull out victories. At one outing I observed only one "slow" yfz that was beaten by any piped raptors, and he was running the stock exhaust. I was simply trying to suggest that there were many, many reasons for this and not just a pipe hp gain or something similar. I believe I got that point acrossed at least in moderation.

As for the internet racers, I may have to agree there. There is entirely too much talk about racing, and not enough members going out and racing for themselves. Unfortunately the majority of younger members that do race for themselves make a point to let everyone know how well they did and to insist that their results are the only outcome possible. On these boards I learned long ago not to let this bother me too much, but its nice to get a word in edgewise every once in a while.

maddog, no malice taken on my end. I knew where you were coming from. If there's anything I've learned on here, it's the fact that you are mature enough to understand where I'm coming from sometimes.

Keep up the good work. I've got some poop storms to stir up.
