Default No rear brakes, Kodiak 450

I had no rear brakes on my 2003 450. I replaced them and the old ones were very worn, almost to metal, but not quite. I also replaced my fronts, and one is down to metal. the discs seemed fine, no scores or gouges. i gave them a light sanding with emory cloth.

when i test drove it, the rears seemed like before i did them. so then i bled the rear brake ONLY, about 5 times. figured that should be plenty. also noticed i was getting to "lower" level in the resevoir. also, i had to adjust about 1/2 or more of the left hand lever adjuster nut, out (which i thot was a lot for new brake job). These are Tusk scintalic(?), whatever they recommend be put on these.

so another test drive and lotsa braking. the rears now "hop" a little when i stand on the brake pedal, but no lock-up (almost like ABS). using the hand brake works better, but not much better. they seem too soft and like they wouldn't help me in a panic stop.

Should these lock up and skid in rear? Is there anything to look at where the hand-brake cable meets the foot brake? I tried to look in there, but it appeasrs that will require a lotta plastic removal. could there be a problem there causing the lack of rear brake power?

I tried a search for "450 brakes" and got NOTHING. Anyone know these braking systems? Any ideas? Thanks a lot for any help.

HOW you describe your back brakes like they fade is what mine is doing i did rears about a month ago and as you say if i use hand brake rear and foot pedal it will stop . but just foot peddle it fades i havent figured it out yet either. would like to fix it right but done all i know like bleeding . i even made sure the sliders your pads move on were freed up to didnt make a difference.

i think i figured it out. i think the rotor musta got warped or otherwise damaged (undetectable). so i might try a new disc/rotor. i read that will affect your braking a lot.

Mine will lock the rear up if I get on them hard. I just wondering if those new pads will do away with the Squeaking we get when a little dirt get in there?

i think it's the crud build up that causes the problem. when i took mine apart, i couldn't believe all the little 'catch' areas that will hold stuff.

hey camo, your daughter looks older than 9, cuz it looks like she's just the right size for the Honda. what's her height/weight? how'd you like the rap80? ours is same color as yours, and it's been great.

That little Raptor has been Great. No problems at all. Wish all atv's were as reliable as it is. My daughter is almost 11 now and growing like a weed. It's been awhile since I've weighed her, I'd say around 80 pounds. Your right, she fits and handles the 250ex perfect. She still likes to get back on the Raptor and putt around. In 3 weeks were taking an ATV vacation for a week. Nothing but camping, fishing, and RIDING. I dont know who's more exicted me or her. Do you all still have snow on the ground? We only got to ride in a couple inches of snow this year. Let us know how your brake problem works out.

sounds great. we're going away on May 18 for an annual family riding weekend. about 80 of us!! kids go NON STOP! so i ordered a new rotor today. can you believe EBC is $90-100?? Yamaha lists it for $42. Xtremepowersports.com is always 15% off retail, so $35. That's 1/3 of the aftermarket. what a joke! anyways, ordered Yamaha and we'll if that changes anything.
