Default Tapping noise after rebuild on a Raptor

I rebuilt my Raptor and put a new rod, new piston (High Comp 12:1) and a Hot Cam Stage I cam in there. The bike seems to run fine but there seems to be a tapping sound. Almost like a valve tap. I also had the head ported. The tapping sounds seems to be coming out of the head. Any ideas? I adjusted the vavles the other day and the exhaust vavles were defintely tight.

On another note.. I came on here to post this question and saw some spy pics of of the Raptor 700. Wow that thing looks spot on. 700ccs, EFI, and it defintely looks like Yamaha has the COG right on this one. I might be game for one down the road. It won't happen until 2007. I would like to see the kinks worked out on this and not fall into the same trap with the 01 Raptors.

I just rebuilt my motor and mine is doing the same thing and come to find out it was my timeing chain. If your timeing chain tensioner is pused in all the way that is probley your problem. If not try man. pushing it in witha screw driver. Thanks.

Yep, the Hot Cam camshafts are much noisier than stock. With all due respect, resetting the timing chain tensioner is a rookie mistake at this stage in the game. I have posted on this and many other veteran Raptor guys have as well. The info is right here on these forums....get some research in BEFORE building. Later gents.

I don't know if the yamaha motors are like suzuki's but my dealer said that my noise was a siezed piston or the wrist pin. so I took it apart and found out that it was my cam chain. all I had to do was order a cam chain tensioner extension from alba for twelve dollars. I would try that first!

Do they make one of those extenders for the Raptor?

I will try the cam chain tensioner tonight see if that is the problem. That tapping is kind of loud.

I have a buddy with the same cam doesn't make the noise mine produces.

hot cam is just a noisy cam, thats all. as long as your sure the noise is coming from the TOP of your head, youll be fine.
