I have a '91 Big Bear 350 4x4. My question is back break bearing replacement. I noticed some up-down play in the back wheel that houses the break drum. I naturally suspect the bearing are shot. I flipped through my HAYNES manual showing how to replace the bearings. The only problem I have is that the book explicitly says that some strange tool is required to lock-unlock the two nuts on the drive shaft. When I called a local dealer to ask for this key they told me that the tightening pressure welds the two nuts together. They simply take a chisel and break them and put two new ones.

Is this really necessary? From what I can see there is no way for the DIY to replace the bearings.

Can anyone shed some light?

I asked for the price of all the necessary to change in innerds (seals, O-rings, bearings, etc.) and get a price of 200 (parts only). Does this price make any sense for a couple of bearings and some gaskets ?

Thanks

Howdy...once you get it apart and have the bearings and seals out...take them to your local bearing retailer and see if he can match some up...they will be cheaper then buying them from the dealer ..
