i went for a short ride on my 2004 660, not even 45 seconds, not enought to get it hot, it ran fine, put it away(garage) went to start it the next day, and it's like the quad has a rev limiter of 3000 rpms, it sounds just like a rev limiter is kicking in, it back fires if you hold the throtle for a few seconds. I took all the plastics off, and inspected everything, even took the plug out. Just doesn't make seice to me, im thinkin is almost has to be somthing electical or the computer, what do you guys think? it must have happin while the quad was sitting over night, im stumped
thanks

Must be the parkbrake. Let me see you can start it no problems. It idles ok but as soon as you give it any throtle it farts, backfires and carries on untill you go back to idle. If I had a dollar for every post in this forum for the parkbrake rev limiter. Thank god yamaha have finaly got it right on the newer models.

There is a little plunger near the clutch lever that went bad on my buddies Raptor that did the same thing. Jiggle that around and see if that helps. I believe he took his off once he found the problem.

It sounds like there is a small amount of water in the bowl. Open the drain and let it drain for awhile.
The vidgorously shake the atv, then close the drain.

I had a similar problem like yours once. It ended up being water after i tried everything else that i could think of.

Hope this helps. $.03

I'd bet money on it. The parking brake needs to be adjusted and connections checked. If you're smart you'll get a block off plate and remove the whole thing.
