A Yamaha Warrior will fit the bill but so will a 300 or 400EX by honda.
He's going to have to break open his piggy bank though.

Get him a 400EX. Easy to ride, reliable and not to expensive. You could find a good used one for about $4000 if you look hard enough.

Honda doesn't suck, I have an '87 Honda and it runs well for an '87 it has never been re-built.
