wolverine recoil starter
#1
Just because I can't leave things alone, I pulled the rope on the recoil starter, but it wouldn't coil back in, I have about a foot hanging out. What do I need to do to have it recoil back in. The rope also felt a bit damp. It it matters, it's an 2003.

I was going to open up the case at the recoil starter, but want some idea what to expect when opening. Thanks

yeah yank snapily and release and jimmy its way back in. could spray some WD-40 down the hole. its kind of like getting mini-blinds to stay or anything else that recoils. unless its totally broken then just jimmy with it pulling it out a little then pushin it in. kind of hard to explain but simple to do. just dont ever pull out ALL the way cause at that point you have nothin left to jimmy with. Just give it like a quick jerk and then imediatly let it back in.

Nothing will happen when you take the recoil starter off (assuming nothing is broken inside). The recoil starter assy is self contained. There is a gasket on it.
If CTATV's trick doesn't work, try the following if you feel the spring is in good shape and just not taking in that small length of rope:
Take the recoil starter assy off and try putting another loop of rope around the spool. You will have to take the center nut off and hold the spool down with your hand. Pull a length of rope out and hold the spool there somehow. Now, see if you can pull that length of rope back inside the assy. Then the tricky part...see if you can lift up on the spool slightly and wrap that length of rope around the spool. If this can be accomplished, this will take up your extra rope.
I have not tried this on the Wolv starter, but have done it on various other recoil starters over the years. Be careful how far you pull up on the spool...I'm sure if you go too far, the spring is going to pop loose. WEAR SAFETY GOGLES!
