I'd do the comp test before just replacing piston & rings. If you're not losing too much power than it could just be valve seals or something. You'll lose some power burning oil regardless of the reason. Smell the oil, if it smells like gas it could be the rings. Also, if you haven't changed that oil in a while it could be real thin and would smell like gas if it's too thin to make a good seal. Fresh oil's cheap enough.
