Yamaha Moto-4 Charging System
Hey everyone,
I have a 1986 Yamaha Moto 4 atv I just bought. The previous owner told me the charging system didnt work and they had to keep it on a trickle charger so it would crank.
I see it has a voltage rectifier connected to the frame, although I am unsure how to troubleshoot it.
Does anyone out there have any knowledge on the charging system on these atv's? and if so would you mind shedding some light on it for me?
thanks for your time,
Jimmy

Hey , I forgot to add in my post, If anyone out there has the wiring schematic/diagram on this model of atv, I would greatly appreciate it if you could make me a copy. If not do you know of a place for me to get it other than buying the 30.00 book.
thanks so much,
Jimmy

Hey man, Yeah I think it is the same. This one is a 1986 model, I think there were some changes on the next couple year models, I saw one had front brakes, and I think shocks. I am going to check further.
Anyway this is a 1986 Yamaha ATV. The seat has Moto-4 on it, and its an 80cc. From the parts diagram, it has a generator attatched to the crankshaft inside the case on the left side, and it has a voltage rectifier that is out on the frame. From what my dad said, he said on the generator it has 1 coil that is for lighting, and 1 for charging. On the outside there is a coil for ignition.
The guy we got it from told us it didnt charge. My dad knows his stuff on electrical, troubleshooting and stuff, but he has just never worked on anything like this. He is unsure how to troubleshoot the Generator and the rectifier. He said if he can get some specifications as to the voltage rectifier wiring output and generator wiring output he could go further. As far as the lighting right now the headlight bulb is bad, but its tailight is good. We noticed that when the motor was idleing the light was dim, and when we gave it gas the light brightened.
I am also searching with no luck for a wiring schematic for this atv.
Hey thanks for replying man, I really appreciate any information you can give me.]
Thanks again,
