well today i decided to change the oil in my recently aquired 1988 warrior. i pulled the drain plug and all was going well untill i took the oil filter out and inspected it. about a 1/4 pile of metal shavings built up on the oil filter. before i changed the oil i started it up and reved it some and a big cloud of blue smoke came out out the exhaust. so what should i think now? the quad sat for 6 months then i bought it and havent changed the oil when ive been riding it for about a month. should i be worried?

Seriously, you know your engine is done. You just need someone like me to tell it to you. Harsh truth, but truth none the less. Tear it down and measure, measure, measure. Throw the bad parts away, put in new parts and go riding again.

If there is no banging, knocking, or clanking sounds, just change the oil, install a magnetic drain plug, and ride it. Probily metal from the shift forks in the tranny. Your filter caught the metal before it hit the crank bearings {like it should}. When I had my ds, I changed the oil every 2 months and you should have seen the metal in the filter and magnet. Your oil might not have been changed for 4 years, and just accumulated 4 years of junk. The blue smoke isn't good. Could be rings, or valve guide seals. Ride it anyway, what the he!!.

I never changed the oil filter in my warrior without finding some metal shavings. When the starter clutch went out the filter was pretty much caked full of it. I don't think the metal shavings are anything to worry about if it's still running smoothly without any strange knocking or rattling. The smoke could be more of an issue. My warrior smokes a little when it's cold, or when I rev it up hard, but that's because I need my valve seals replaced, and i'm too tired of fixing this damn thing to really care. I hope you have better luck with yours than i've had with mine so far, because mine has turned out to be a money pit.
Even though it has been a money pit, i'd have a hard time finding another quad that I would rather have.

You say the wheeler sat for 6 months and then you started it? I would not be concerned about it blowing some smoke. It could be anything.
The metal shavings are not that big of a deal. Buy a drainplug with a magnet on it.
Don't tear the motor down because of some metal shavings and smoke. Wait until the motor starts making noise, if it ever does. A teardown now would be a waste of $$$.

im not in a position with money to be tearin her apart so im not gonna do that. when i do start it that starter makes a loud clankin noise, so that might have sumthin to do with it, it had a new starter installed a while ago, might not have been put together right.... just on start up it smokes then after i get r warmed up it doesent smoke

If she is smoking on startup and then it goes away. You either need a valve adjustment or your valve seats are bad
Adjust the valves. If you know you did it right and it still smokes, you probably need the valves done. If that is the case, it really won't hurt the wheeler if you ride it like that.
As far as the starter, I don't think it has anything to do with the metal shavings in the motor. The "clanking" you hear, may just be the jackshaft of the starter going in/out
Good luck.
