There are very few stupid questions as far as Im concerned. and this isnt one of them. To check your chain for wear you want to look for a couple of things. First thing you need to do is grab a hold of the chain where it goes around the rear sprocket. You want to try and pull the chain off the sproket and see how much of a gap you get between the chain rollers and the bottom of the sprocket teeth. The more of the sprocket you can expose the more the chain is worn. Next look at the sprocket teeth, front and rear. And see how they look. Are they hooked at all? do they look worn? you may have to look at a picture of a good sprocket to get a idea what your looking for. If the sprockets look good but the chain is worn you can just replace the chain. But if the sprocket show any wear at all and the chain is stretched you should replace them as a set. Hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions. MWQ

Well, the chain is considered worn and needs replacement if it has stretched to the point the adjuster can't tighten it. Also it should probably be replaced if you have any links that are "kinked" or broken, etc. As for the sprockets, the teeth should be fairly pointy and straight. If any are rounded, bent, or even broken off it is time for new. The sprocket that comes off the engine often starts developing curved teeth when it is time to replace it. When one item does wear out the common practice is to replace everything. A mixture of new and old components tends to cause the new stuff to wear prematurely. Also, whatever you do, go with a quality chain when you buy new.

Another quick way to look, I saw on motorcyle show, is go to the back sprocket, the middle where the chain comes onto and leaves the sprocket, and pull on it outwards. If the chain comes off a lot, then start looking to replace the chain and sprockets, but if there is only a little paly when pulling on it, then u are good for now.
