Default Warrior ignition timing

I bought a warrior as a pile of parts for my son and I to build. Pretty sure it's mostly an 89.

Got the motor running yesterday, but will run on choke only and spits fire out the carb when attempting to start with choke off. The cam timing is good. I'm thinking that it is firing on the exhaust stroke, but I can't figure out where you would change that and the manuals are no help. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Chuck

sounds like your (180 out) you need to take your timing chain back off your cam and roll it over one more time till it hits top dead center agine...

Not a problem to do that, but out of curiosity how does it "know" which stroke it is on?

well its kinda hard to explain..LOL we go a raptor 180 out and it acted just like your warrior is...so we called and they told us it was 180 out..so we took the timing chain off the cam and rolled it till the timing marks came back up on the flywheel..and put it back together and it work...being a warrior is a two valve head i wonder if you can just turn the cam over a half turn and it will work?

Well, that wasn't it. When I did that, it would just start on the choke but sounds terrible and applying any throttle killed it immediately. Put it back the way it was and it's back to running pretty good on the choke, dieing with choke off and spitting fire out the carb when attempting to start with the choke off.

One interesting thing that I did notice - the petcock must be screwed up internally. I shut the gas off while it was running because I wanted to drain the carb and line out. Engine kept running no matter what position the petcock was in.

Another odd thing, running the motor on the choke didn't result in a gas smell from the exhaust at all? If it wern't for the backfiring, I would think that it's just starving for fuel.

Guess once it cools down, I'll try feeding it gas from a bottle and see if the petcock or fuel filter is partially clogged.
