I keep hearing this and it vexes me where the idea came from. I've never heard of a reason why you can't weld cast, my case saver ear is even welded back onto my cast aluminum case. Maybe there's some underlying property of casting that makes it more difficult, but I'm not aware of a situation where it's not possible.

It can be and is done all the time on Aluminum.
Grind it smooth around the area to be welded and back bevel it, because cast is porus and can have contaminates in it you need to pre heat it and sweat any of the impurities out. Make sure to match your rod to your material and have at it. If done right it will not break in the same spot again in the event of another crash.

No problem, I'm no expert but I broke enough aluminum pieces on my Winged Sprinter over the years that I had to learn to weld all types of Aluim. and maganese rear end housings as well.
Believe me I crash tested them way more than I would like to admit

That really stinks. I would just replace it. A very expert welding guy could get it pretty close to as strong as it was.
I have been welding on the farm for many years, including cast metals. It can be tough to make a repair stronger or as good as the original piece. And you might think that you have got it, till it shears off again at exactly the same place.
