starter problems 727cc raptor
#1
Hello!
I bulit a 105mm CP piston kit, hotcamII, ported head, 35mm keihin on my raptor 660 (2004).
Now I have problems with the starter of my raptor. The starter is too weak for the big piston. Now the fly wheel an the starter is completely damaged.
Has anybody experience with this problem or know about a way out?
I will not chnage a new fly wheel every month on my raptor. Here in germany a fly wheel will costs 300 Euros and a new starter 380 Euros.

I have a Grizzly battery in mine and it turns my 14:1 piston over fine. You should make sure the decompression mech is installed properly, and if you use the decomp mechanism, weld the studs on the cam gear to keep it from coming apart. The other option is a manual decompression mech, using a schrader valve that the head is modified to have installed.

Your auto decompresion pin is probably 180 out in your cam or not installed. You should have no problems starting if that's working. Do you hear a strong tapping sound when its running? Thats the indicator that its 180 out.

Now my raptor doesn´t run because of the damaged fly wheel and starter.
I cannot remind to hear such a tapping sound.
Every time I will start my raptor, at the first second when I press the starter button the starter will not rev up, than (I keep pressed the button) it rev up and the engine is starting. (the battery 12V 12Ah is new)
Days later I drive out for a few miles, I notice that the engine has not really good power, it likes the piston wedge and a few seconds later I heard one strong tapping sound and the engine goes out.
Immediately I drive at home and wait for a few hours until the engine is cool down. I press the starter button again but the starter didn´t rev up.
I put the starter out of the engine to see what happens. The carbon brush conductors and the rotor (reel) is completly damaged and the fly wheel too.
I think the huge piston and the hard starting is a cause for it.

Raptors are notorious for faulty one-way starter bearings. This could be your problem, not nessesarily your monster piston.
Have you replaced the one way? The aftermarket replacement is L&A. Also, checkout raptortranny.com. There is good info there.

Yes I know about L&A. The last fley wheel runs 100 miles. I will become a new one because of warranty.
When this new one will damaged again I will buy the L&A fly wheel.
The time of shipping from USA to germany is very long because I try the oem one again.
