2004 Raptor660r Idle problem
While out on the trail awhile back, My quad would continue to run at about 1/3 trottle after letting my thumb off the throttle. Flicking the throttle didnt help, but moving the choke lever did. So, I spoke with a buddy who also has a Raptor and he mentioned that the plunger on the other end of the Choke cable may need lubing. So I did that and it worked for just a short while. So, I then replaced the entire Choke Cable. That fixed things for a while too. But now the problem is there again.
When I lubed the plunge I used some lithium grease and put only a very small amount on. Is there any way to smooth the inside of where that plunger sits. Or is the problem all together someething else. We had the carbs off last summer and they were clean as a whistle when we put them back on.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

You have to remember the choke cable/plunger can and should be adjusted properly.
But, your throttle cable has several adjustments in it. One is at the throttle housing on the handlebars. The other adjustment is down near the petcock where the cable enteres the housing on the carburetor. And the third is the idle adjuster screw on the bottom of the carb throttle housing. It could be your throttle adjustment is out of whack.
However, I would bet $50 you need a new throttle cable. If the cable is bad, it could be binding up. I had a similar problem two weeks ago with a bad idle. It started doing the same things within the span of two weeks and one ride: not idling, sticking slightly open. I thought maybe it was my pilot jet, but I replaced the throttle cable and adjusted it. She purrs like a kitten now. It's a cheap and easy fix. Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I probably will replace the throttle cable but it seems to me that if it WAS the throttle cable, it would settle down woth a couple of blips to the thumb lever. quick whacks if you follow me. But I probably should throw one on there anyway. SInce its been plenty wet and its 2.5 yrs old. Thanks

That was my initial, instinctive reaction: Blip the throttle a couple times and the cable will unstick itself. No dice. If it's frayed, or if the plastic casing has constricted, it's not going to happen. I'll bet the cost of a new cable that, considering it's 2.5 years old, that's your problem. good luck
