I just bought a 1999 wolverine as a project bike. I found it on Ebay for 1200.00. The seller stated that a rear brake caliper was missing and the battery needed to be replaced. (no other notable problems) When I picked the bike up, I discovered a major problem. While loading the bike into my truck, I noticed the front tires spinning trying pull up the ramp. It was immediately apparent that the rear end was not pulling. The seller stated that he did not realize that the rear end had a problem (he had just bought the bike to sell). He also stated that he had 100% positive feedback and intended to keep it. He offered to rebuild the rear differential at no cost to me. I just pulled the chunk and sent it to him today.

The surprises did not end there. I inspected the bike and discovered that a ball joint was out requiring an a-arm replacement, the front brake calipers were also missing, the carb needs work, the front differential needs new bearings, the foot pegs are both bent, the lights do not work, and there are lots of bolts missing from various parts of the frame.

The only good news is that the bike has a decent supertrapp slip-on exhaust, a new seat cover, and a brand new set of wheels and tires off a 450 wolverine. The engine seems to be in good shape but I have a feeling that I will need to put new clutch plates in. (I test drove the bike around my yard before tearing it down. The front wheels were spinning all over the place so I could not tell for sure but I thought there was some clutch slippage.






Bit off more than I wanted to chew here but I guess I'll restore one for all the wolverine fans out there.

Good luck with that. Sounds like that thing got beaten pretty hard. $1200 sounds a little high for the amount of work it needs though.

 

yea.. def wouldn't of paid $1200 for something like that... $600 tops.. i don't care what year it is

 

Well I wouldn't have either if I hadn't already bought it on Ebay. It was misrepresented. I'll probably need around 300 to 400 in parts to get it close to 100%. It will be worth 2 grand once I do the work. If I couldn't do the labor myself I'd really be upside down in it. As it stands, I'll be able to get my money back pretty easy.


I'll probably just keep it for a while as a backup bike for my "bikeless" friends and family.
