take the carb back apart- something is wrong in there! it should NOT be draining out the overflow tube. Take it apart and try it again.

Sounds like you moved your float. Reset that and see if it leaks.

If it backfires while you give it gas your main is rich. If it backfires on idle or when whgine braking your idle is rich.

a dynojet 148 is going to be WAAAAY too big. There's no way the instructions could have possibly recommended that! Try something like a 134-136.

JLSparky, i think you have it backwards, backfiring usually means lean, and his glowing pipe proves that!

Backfiring through the exhaust usually means rich, as the unburnt fuel bulds up in the muffler and when enough acculmulates along with sufficient O2, it ignites in the muffler, backfire through the intake or carb usually means lean since the slow burn of the mixture in the combustion chamber allows flame to still be present when the intake valve opens.

considering that dynojets are sized much differently than mikuni jets, and that a 148 dj is something like a 170 mikuni, i'm pretty sure there's no way in hell that thing is running rich.

Glowing red hot pipes?
Fuel build up will never exist in that environment it would evaporated and burned before it even reached there.
Even though you have a number difference in the jet sizes.
Use a wire gauge set to mesure the inside diameter of the jet hole.
Or if you have a set of Number drills this also can be used to measure the diameter and compare the new jet hole size to the original jets.

Red hot means it is running lean. Running Hot! Fact!
Running Rich, loading up there will be carbon tar like substance and fouled plugs not enough of heat to backfire.
Dual cylinders, if one side was not firing or misfiring one pipe will get red hot and the other would remain cooler.

Hate to say this but if the exaust pipe visually did really get red hot and that is made of steel!
Can we picture the aluminum piston? It may have already has started crystalizing!
Ouch be carefull here this is not a good sign!
