Default 87 warrior problems!!!

First of all noob to the forum, old to the sport.
Here is what i got a buddys 87 warrior(yeah thats right the original) that was givin to him and ran ok but has cut out at top speed since he got it.We cleaned the carb, tank, new plug, air filter, oil&filter and checked the valves, exhaust, and everything electrical that the manual has specs for and just couldn't find it.I was thinking cdi but the thing ran and started fine.Well he got the bright idea to put hotter gas in it and pumped it full of 100 octane fuel.We went to our favorite riding spot 2 weeks ago and half way through the day it started running fine keeping close to up with my 400Ex!well took it home and put it away, the next day it wouldn't start.Brought it over and we got it started but no power what so ever, backfiring through the carb and exhaust, and barely could keep it running at all.gave it fresh 87 pump gas cleaned the carb checked compression, changed the plug and still nothing.started looking at hard parts the cam chain i think is stretched due to the T on the fly wheel lined up the cam sprocket groove is about.25 inch from the mark on the intake side(not a full tooth though)also the thing will rip the pull start chord right out of your hand when pulling! My question is does that line have to be dead on the head mark or am i way off base in telling him he needs a cam chain?also could this have been his problem before or does it sound like the parking break rev limiter(did an 87 even have a limiter)?Any help would be great I'm running out of ideas on this thing.THANKS jay

no mods bone stock!Stock jet, exhaust, and all factory settings.the question about the cam chain is the biggest one does the cam mark line up deadn@ts with the mark on the head,or is the chain streched?the cam sprocket mark is about one half tooth away from the head mark to the intake side, the t on the flywheel is lined up perfectly with the notch on the stator cover.would this cuase the problem(s) we are having with this quad?

also the 87s didn't have the BS parking brake limiter.so thats not it(no wires but the clutch switch coming from that area).he is ready to pull it apart and start selling it as parts on ebay to buy another quad.that sounds like more work than getting this on running to me.Help me fix this poor quad quick before it meets its demise!

Have you done a compression check? Might be time for a top-end rebuild. Also what size jets are in it? What elevation? What temp? More info would be helpful.

When was the last time he had the carb rebuilt? Sounds just like my warrior and my father wolverine did when ever the smallest partical would find its way into the carb and obstruct a port. When you cleaned the carb, did you check for loose parts or torn diaphrams?

It could be a streched Cam chain too. If the marks do not perfectly line up I would get one. This could explain the lack of top end and back fireing. The day it was running good might have been simply by luck.

I use to own an 87warrior in which every piece had been replaced or fixed. Awesome quad, but it had weak A-Arms and no 4wheel drive. I have also never run anything but 91 Octane fuel in my Quads....
