HOW OFTEN DO YOU RIDE YOUR 4X4 IN 2X4 MODE??
Somehow people got by just fine in the mid eighties and early nineties before 4wds were readily available. 95% of the time I don't need 4wd, and before having 4wd, I was able to get around those places where I needed it the other 4% of the time. It might be a little harder to get by without it in those southern states I suppose where deep mud is about the only thing you ride through. A little extra ground clearance in the rear would almost make the need for 4wd obsolete, of course you need to ride a 2wd through those places a little more aggresively.

Any open trail riding i do I am in 2WD almost always. i only kick in 4WD in deep mud, snow and creeping over ricks and trees making my own trail. I would say 90% of the time in 2WD, but would not give up the option of 4WD. It is also good to have 4WD pulling a trailer of cord-wood through the trails, just the extra traction you need.

I'm in the same boat, I think it has a lot to do with what part of the country you're in. Then again every now and then, it is nice to have it where you know there is that possibility of getting stuck and snow, forget about it, I can ride in snow three times as deep as what I could've with my Raptor. Again ground clearance was the biggest reason.

If you want a sport quad then buy a 2WD sport quad.
If you want a utility quad buy a 4WD utility quad whether or not you are in 4WD or 2WD more or less insn't important. 2WD mode in a utility quad just gives you better handling on dry stuff.
You just have to decide where and how you are going to ride.
