Default Poping at high RPM

I have a 98 Big Bear 4x4. When running at high RMPs, the engine makes a popping noise. Also, it will die out sometimes if you let it idle down to fast.

It has sat up for a few years. The muffler is busted. I have a new one on the way. Could the problems be just from the muffler?

Thanks

Adam

Center of muffler rusted out and eventually fell apart. The pipe that curves down at the end of the pipe fell out.

it also is reducing backpressure which will make it stall

It's probably time to check your valve clearances also. If your clearances get too tight, it will cause the same problem. Also, how long has it been running lean w/o the silencer? It's surprising how quickly you can burn the valves and seats. Run a compression test-if it's low, put some oil in the cylinder and do it again. If the compression comes up, it's do to ring and cylinder wear. If the compression doesn't change, it's time for a valve job.Good luck!
