The key to using a winch effectively is to spool most of the line out before you start to pull. This is where you get the most pulling power as it quickly loses an effective gearing ratio the more the line is wrapped on the spool.

Also, you can always use a ****** block, but this will cut your reach from the quad down by half.

oh, I also forgot to mention that I'd look at a 2500 to 3000 pound winch. Don't want to mess up the frame pulling too much weight with a 4500 pounder.

I have to let off sometimes on my 2.5 because I,m afraid it will tear the wheels off the ATV before they come out off the hole.

4500! That would get my truck out of a ditch.

buy new tires j/k.

the part about your truck is the reason i say get the 4500. bigger is better right??? you may never need it, but its nice to have just in case. And I doubt you'd bend the frame unless you were just doing something stupid.
plus its only $90.00 more.

How much larger and heavier is a 4500? Would it be like hauling a 12" cement block around all day long hoping you need it one day.

that i don't know couldn't find the specs on it, but dosent appear to be much bigger than the 3000 series. 1.5 hp motor vs .9 hp in the 3000 series so your talking maybe 10 lbs max.

just an fyi... you can put the ****** block on vehicle you're pulling out and run the winch cable thru it and back to your quad to practially double the pulling power...

I think a 3000 is perfect for a quad... I have the 2500 and although it works most of the time... there are those few occasions where it doesn't... (I've had to hook 3 quads up to pull one out before... just to give you an idea of how stuck we sometimes get... )

yeah, i got a ****** block on mine all the time. there has been times I've had to go get a lil yota to pull mine out.

But do you think the 4000 would have saved you from needing 3 wheelies to pull it out?????

clarification its a 4000 lb winch not a 4500 lb winch can't find any specs on it still, but by pictures they look to be about equal size.

None of us used ****** blocks to pull that one out... (we weren't able to get close enough....) a 4000 wouldn't have made a difference. He tried to winch himself out, and it was so stuck that it just wore his battery down. It was that sticky, field run-off mud that sits under tall grass. You can be walking on top of it, and then your foot goes thru up past your knee...
