Ok i have a 94 kodiak 400cc and it starts up fine and idles great and also revs up fine but when i take off after about 20 seconds of driving it just dies and then its hard to start back up.. i have to let it sit for a few mins then it starts back up and does the same thing.. i'm usually in second gear when this happens.. any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Check the carb float. There is a drain screw underneath the float bowl. When the quad quits, quickly remove the screw and see if gas comes out. If it don't, the float is stuck and needs cleaning and lubing. If gas does come out, it could be flooding out,(float stuck open), OR you have a bad CDI module.

To check for spark, pull the spark plug-ground it to the engine, and try to start the quad. The spark should be blue or white. If no spark, the CDI is bad and needs replacing, OR the spark plug is bad and it needs replacing.

And you do have fresh gas and the correct spark plug, right?.

 

ok.. ill check the to see if gas comes out or not from the float screw... yea the gas is brand new and its a fairly new spark plug but also it is back firing so im guessing its running a little lean?
