Default YZ85 or TTR125

my son has been riding a ttr 125 for about 2 years now and hes asking for more power. im afraid to get him the yz125 because i think its going to be too big and im afraid the yz85 might not be enough power for him. hes about 5' 0'' and is starting to go faster then just cruising around. he also likes to go through the occasional trail but not that much. does anyone know if the YZ85 will be a good dirt bike for him?

The TTR 225 is a tame trail bike..Has more power than its little brother, but not a mx bike..I hear the new ones are pretty nice..

It's been a while, but the 80 2 strokes used to flat out leave the 100 4 stokes. I can't imagine much has changed today, and I'd say the yz85 would have a lot more power than the ttr125. The main thing to consider is power delivery. The TTR has a smooth power delivery that starts at the bottom and is easy to control, it can also be ridin casually and slow trail riding is easy. The YZ has almost no bottom end and the powerband hits hard midway through the RPMs, making it hard to putt around on and it will stall on any moderate hill if it is not kept in the powerband. So, a lot of the question is the type of riding, does he currently like the power delivery of the 4 stroke, and do you want the higher maintenance/fuel cost of a 2 stroke? If he is not competing or does not desire the hit of the powerband, a bigger 4 stroke may be the better answer. If you decide to go the 2 stroke route, don't do it without him being able to test ride one first (in a large open area). Also keep in mind that he may outgrow the yz85 quickly, but I'm not up to date enough to know that (my friends and I were riding a yz80 at 10-11 years old, but that was a long time ago).

yea he has been riding on a small track with a couple jumps but he wishes he could get more air without bottoming out. he said it usually bottoms out if he gets too much air so i was looking into getting him a more motocross type dirtbike but im also afraid that he will grow out of it quick. i looked at the seat height and its 34 inches for the yz85 and 31 for the ttr125. i also know from owning a blaster is that two strokes are a little bit higher maintence and can eat up a bunch of gas sometimes. we went to a motocross track one weekend with his ttr and it didnt do to well because he said it was hard to get good air and not bottom out but the trails there he said that it did really well and that he didn't have a problem. now since hes older, he has been going faster and jumping more so i though it might be a good idea to get him more of a racing one than a trail bike.
i don't want to get him the yz125 because thats a big jump to go from 31 inches to 39 inches and i think that might be a little too fast so i might just wait for him to get older to get him the yz125

Have you even looked at the TTR 230 (were 225's) It seems so perfect for what you are looking for..Here is the link..

yeah It's just a step up from the TTR 125,dont let the 230 scare you, those bikes are *****-cats..but he might have the same problem though..They don't have a track suspention..But I think this bike may last you longer,He will want to chuck that tiny yz 85 in no time at all..
