Default Warrior Hard Starting/Staying Running

I am new to the forum and recently bought 93 Yamaha Warrior. I tried researching the forum before posting a new topic. I did find one solution to one of the problems I had with the parking brake by disconnecting the two wires by the clutch lever and connecting the other two to make a full circuit and this correct the spudering/misfiring problem I had. I do have two more problems with the bike that is puzzling me. It has a unifilter, jetkit(not sure which stage, assuming stage 1) and the factory exhaust which has been gutted(changing real soon) One is that sometimes it will fire up and idle fine sometimes and others it will fire up and shut off as soon as the throttle is realeased and then it is extremely hard to get started back up. I also noticed that the times it is harder to get started back up it will have a different sound from the starter. Battery maybe? I was told it needed a new battery but I also tried a newer one from a yamaha breeze 125 and same problem. I'm not sure if this a carb, battery or firing issure. Also I checked the spark from the plug at night time and it does appear kinda weak and the plug is new and already black. The second issue is that it does smoke when riding and it kinda smells like fuel but after idleing for a while the smoking will stop until pushing the throttle. Maybe running rich? The fuel mixture screw has been tampered with cause it looks kinda stripped. I am debating on getting a stock carb and putting it on but not sure where to start at.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

it sounds like your maybe a little rich and you have a weak spark(ign. coil or stator) and cuz ur spark is weak that prolly why it smokes its not buring it all off,and your starter may be worn a little the brushes and plate prolly...does it sometimes make like a deeper whine and sometimes its a higher pitch when u turn it over? and just to be safe id go over all your wiring it can be suprising what a bad ground, frayed wire, loose connection can do but im thinking your carb is a little rich and your coil or stator is going out, on top of a weak starter. the starters you can get on ebay for like $50 ive seen, rickys stators are better than OEM and there like $157 +shipping i think, and the ign.coils are around like $40-50 usually

Thanks for the reply. I replaced the coil today and now it does start everytime. I have two more issues with the quad now or they may have already existed but I was unaware since it wouldn't stay running. I did notice about mid-throttle it will spudder or start to break up and once you open the throttle to wide open and let off it won't idle and turn off but if you hit the throttle 4 or 5 times with the clutch in it will idle until doing so again. Would this possibly be a worn intake boot or carb adjustment maybe? I did notice a very small rip in the rubber but wasn't sure it was all the way through. The smoking I mention in the orginal post is present but only until the engine warms up or hard acceleration.

The second issue is I have oil leak at the very top of the head on the front side on the engine toward the front end near the spark plug. I was wondering if this could exhaust intake gasket or something else?

Thanks!

yea id replace any dry rotted pieces, and make sure the clamps are tight and your filter is clean, whens the last time you cleaned your carb? and the leak your talking about im guessing your talking about the exhaust valve cover? i dont think they come with gaskets but if its leaking id pull it off and clean it up and get it to seal a little better then tighten it down good, or if you wanted you could prolly put a thin layer of gasket sealer

I have an update on this.

I took the carb off and cleaned and put it back together. I that seemed to fix the spuddering problem. Maybe some debre in there or something. The smoking problem seems to be the only thing left. I did notice when I bought it that it I don't remember it smoking until I tampered with the carb because I thought the coil issue I had with it running was carb related. I think I am going to do a compression check just to emlimate that possibility of the rings being tired. But the white smoke does smell a little like fuel. The plug is black and I just put a new in not too long ago and I'm thinking it could be running rich. Also would not having a baffle out of the stock exhaust make it run rich? Any suggestions?

Oh and also what would be the correct adjustments for the carb if the smoking could be related? I turn the fuel mixture 2 1/2 turns out but I'm not sure it that is suppose to be in sync the idle adjustment or what is the correct way of doing this? I also got the fuel mixture screw mixed up with the drain screw. It is the drain screw that is stripped not the fuel mixture screw.

yea your prolly rich, you running your box with the airbox lid on? if so take it off and see what it does if its rich it should run a little better, does it run strong though? you might have a bad valve or a bad valve seal

Yeah, I still have the air box on and seems pretty strong. I'll try taking the lid off. I was watching run yesterday and it puts out alot of white/blue smoke at first when started then it will thin out as it is warming up but as soon as the engine is revved it will put out more smoke but no as much when its first started.
