Wolverine problems ???
#1
I have a 99 wolverine i bought it used in 2002. The first owner never took it out of the building, so i bought it and ever sence it ran everyday and many trips on the weekends about 100- 150 miles a weekend. It had been smokeing for some time and about a month ago I got back from a ride, and it was not runing to good, so i rebuilt it. New rings and valves that had stopped the smoking. Now it dosen't have any power in the mid range. It runs like a top idleing and reving up. But when put it in gear and take off it will studder and take for ever to rev up enough to power to get to the next gear. Like it it will run good a high rpm but as soon as u get to the next gear it powers out. I'm sure it is in the Carb. i had taken it apart and cleaned it (before a piece of dirt clogged up the vacum on the side for the slide) i tried the fuel air mixture screw it made a it a little better. I don't think i need to rejet it sence it is stock and all the parts are genuine yamaha parts.
I need some help! it is giving me a h#$l of an headache.

Yhea it definetly sounds like you might have some dirt in the carb, also did you adjust the valves after you got everything back together. One other thing I can think of is maybe it is a tooth off on your timing.

Thanks.
Well I ordered a carb rebuild kit with all new jets and o-rings etc. The valves I adjusted to .003 intake and .006 Exhaust. And i have checked them sence and they are staying there. Compression is 124 psi the book said 126 is the max. The timing was a 1/2 tooth advanced or 1/2 tooth retarded, I couldn't get it to line up perficlly with TDC. (That was with a the old chain every sence i have had it it was retarted 1/2 tooth.) So when i put back together with the new chain I put it in the same spot. Like I said It will start just by taping the button. It will idle and rev up good siting still. I have noticed that it idles lean and when riding it, it is rich.??

I know no one will reply, but i give it a shot.
Everything above i have tried. Now I have new jets new sets a new float and float needle and set, basicly everything for the bottom of the carb. Now it will run real well on the high rpm, but it will cut out on the low to middle range ( like a rev limiter till it gets to a certain rpm) It misses. I have tried it all and Im out of ideas.
please help it has been 4 months sence i have been able to ride it.

Check your intake boot between the carb and the head. Look for any small tears or pinholes. Check the sealing surface to the head. Sounds like you may have a vaccum leak. I once had a similar problem with my raptor, a backfire caused my intake boot to tear. Not knowing or thinking that as a problem I rebuilt both my carbs twice, checked timing and compression. Everything checked out fine, I even went as far as to drop $600 on an Edelbrock carb for it. Needless to say I installed the new carb and manifold to have it run better than ever before!!! At that point I was bound and determined to find the problem with the dual carb setup. I rebuilt them for the second time, triple checking everything as I put them back together. Then I borrowed my buddies raptor and installed them on his., to have them work perfectly!! That was when I realized I didn't use my intake boots on his. I go home start looking them over to find a 1/2 inch tear in the main carb boot!!! All of the headache I went through was a simple vaccum leak that caused all of my power loss and misfiring! Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to get the whole story out there. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
I have thought about the boot. I once took it off inspected it, it looked good but u can miss a little hair line crack in it, I also had put some gasket maker on the o-ring side on the motor. Does anyone know what all vaccum leaks and what not in the carb. I think i'm lossing vuccum around the diaphragm that pulls up the slid with the needle.
