Default transmission stuck in reverse

I have an old, but fairly reliable, Yamaha YFM200 (1986). That was until I got it stuck in reverse two weeks ago. My fault, definitely. I was trying to pull a trailer and dock out of the water with it that weighed too much. The trailer, and the 4wheeler, had settled in the sand, so I was trying to rock it a little and it went into reverse and won't come out.
The reverse latch (the lever you squeeze and pull) is stuck in the up position, and won't move. What I am trying to find out is, how do I determine if it is actually stuck in reverse or could it just be the lever is jammed ? I don't want to start taking it apart and wind up make it worse.
Any help would he appreciated. Thanks!

I would try putting it up on a jack and getting the wheels off the ground. Maybe slacking things up would allow it to move.
