They do 50+ mph, my friend has a 2000 401cc liguid cooled Kodiak, which also has a low range ,not sure what Yamaha was thinking when they removed the low range option on the later models. Cost saving I quess.

low range is gearing that ether keeps the mechine in LOW gears, 1st-2nd usually, so it will let the rpms go higher for pulling and toeing.

Low range Its especially handy on a belt drive Automatic like the 400 Kodiak for slow technical riding. I had it on my old 86 250 Moto4 and 89 350 Big Bear, now you have to go to a 450 for Yamaha to even offer it now which sucks.

I was planning to get a cheapish winch - do you think they will break?

i have no problem getting an ebay winch, the are esentially old versions of warn winches. the companies that make the winches just waterproof them a bit more. iv had my viper winch for 2years, no trouble.
