depends.. some info would help... what upgrades do you have (if any). What kind of filter? do you have a pre-filter? are you going to be riding water at all?

well if its stock there is not really a point.. i put a k&n filter with the lid on and it ran too hot..so i had to rejet and now it is running really bad.. so I would be careful about taking the lid off with a stock atv.. I'm fairly new to the whole "mods" thing because I just got my quad this last summer so some people might tell you otherwise.. but I would say get a new air filter a jet kit and some after market exhaust before taking off/drilling the air box lid..

oh and it would just let more air in to your carb.. if you do however do it make sure you have a pre filter

I can only add that my bro had a Suzi Z250 and that thing would not run at all with the lid off. It had to be re jetted to get it to run

More air in means you will need more fuel in.....so if you open the box you will need to rejet....... otherwise you will be running way too lean, which will cause you to run too hot, which will eventually burn a hole in the top of your piston.....

Like he said...

If you take the lid off... you need to rejet. You will gain a little power. You can probably get the jets you need for about 12 bucks...
