And the Warrior Saga starts
#1
I am a novice mechanic and have never rebuilt a motor of any type. I am sure I can do it. I recently acquired two warriors for $1100 and sold the one that runs for $1000.
So I am starting with a 99 Warrior, with metal shavings in the motor and not running. The motor has been torn down by someone else. I believe it is complete. My question is too the experienced builder out there.
If I am going to do it, I should go ahead and make it hot. What do you recommend? Please don't reply "look at the rest of the forum" I have already started.
Clean slate with a budget of $900. Let's hear it guys.
Thank you.
PS I have located another motor of $100 buck that runs.

Check out my sig if you are looking for mods. A brief list with prices
HMF Sport Slip-on: $220
K&N Pro Design Air Filter: $60
WebCam 84grind .430" lift and HD valve springs: $200
J&E High Compression Piston .040 over $100ish
Bore the cylinder and a port and polish: $200-$300 depending on the machine shop
That comes to around $800, so that will leave you with money for a full gasket rebuild kit and I'd put a new clutch in as well.

Rebuild it as stock, sell it and take all the money you made, and go buy a stock bike that doesn't need any engine mods to have fun on. If you don't like that idea, beefy has a good plan, except JE now only makes 366cc pistons for Warriors (.080" over) for $200 which is still a good idea for those that want the most bang for the buck, just don't blow it up - then you have to re-sleeve the cylinder.

I second the build it stock and buy a different one.

If you had iron filings floating around, I'd check the crank and rod big end bearing, along with the wrist pin and bearing. Even if you check it with a dial indicator and the play is in "spec", you might have galled the crank pin and/or wrist pin. If your second engine is decent, chances are the crank might be better in it. Also, check your camshaft(s) and follower surfaces to see if the lobes are galled/worn. Metal filings wreck bearings everywhere. By the time you get done making sure the bearings and other parts are good to go, your budget might be shot. I'd take both engines totally apart, clean it all and then have a GOOD mechanic help measure/check everything before you start ordering parts.

Here is the update, I tore down the old motor and found that the main bearing was toast. Locked down good. Someone else tore the motor down before me and gave up.
I bought the other motor that runs, it just has a crack back near the sprocket. The decision has been made to just swap cases and keep it stock. I will keep you updated.
Just waiting on my fly wheel puller and should have it running this weekend I hope.
thanks for all your help.

And now to the second problem.... I have the new motor in place and everything seems good. Just no spark. How do I check the CDI and Stator? Where do I start? I don't mind mechanic work, but chasing electrical ghosts drive me insane. I had spark a couple of times and now none.
