Question What's wrong with 660r's

First of all, I realize that 01's have tranny problems or somethin, but other than that, why are they so much cheaper than raptor 700's? For example: I could get a 660r for $2000 and a 700 for more than $4000. What's the difference? Anything I should look for? Also, I believe the 660's have reverse as well as the 700's, so what's the catch?

Thanks

anytime a newer version comes out the old ones can be purchased for alot cheaper, specially since alot of the guys selling the 660s are doing it so they can upgrade to the 700, plus 01 was pretty long ago the 700s are a good bit different then the 660s almost everything was improved, i know the 01s had some tranny probs and i think the rear shock was a little different and stuff...but to be on the safe side i would get an 02 or above, unless the person selling the 01 already had the tranny mod done or something.

They are cheap because they are now outdated....... They are tall and tippy, and do not handle anywhere near as good as the new machines. So in that the market value drops on them....

There is nothing wrong with them mechanically.....

Some machines will hold value better because they can still perform like a modern machine... a 1999 400ex is still the same design as a 2009, so the old ones will hold value.

The 660 was not a great design to start with, so compared to the 700 which is a good design, they will not hold a comparative value.

well the 700 is a bigger motor that comes with fuel injection which makes it more because the 660s have two carberuators which makes it a pain to jet right and also the newer 700 have piggy back resevoirs in the front shocks so theres better suspension and raptors have been known to strip the starting gear and have starter problems other than that i have not came into any other problems with my raptro

the reason the 700s are more is because 1 they are newer and they are pretty much known as the best all around sport quad out there. any problems that the 660s had the 700 fixed such as a frame with a lower center of gravity, fuel injection, brakes exc. there is so much power to be made with basic mods on a 700

The 02 and up 660 raptors didn't have any major issues. I had an 05 660 and now have an 08 700. The difference between the two is night and day. Everything has been changed. The frame on the 06 and up is a 2 peice steel and aluminum frame, the engine was bumped up to a 686cc with FI, they did away with the 5 valve head, the swing arm and carrier assy is redisigned, as well as the suspension. The piggyback front shocks did not come on the 06 700 or the basic 07 700. You had to buy the LE model in 07. 08 and up all have the upgraded shocks. Having owned both, if it's in your budget, I would go with the 700. It is well worth the extra money IMO.

I'm with geoman on this one. I owned an 02 660. I hated it so much I ran it into a tree at full speed! LOL! Seriously, though, it is very tippy and nothing close to the machine the 700 is. I do realize your budget won't allow for the purchase of a 700. That said, I would strongly encourage you to ride the 660 before you buy it and make sure you like it, especially the way it handles.
