Default 1989 Breeze Starter Grinding

I just bought a Breeze for my son. The ad said it doesn't start so I got what I thought was a good deal. I opened it up and found that the gears that connect the starter to the big gear on the main shaft were missing, also the teeth on the starter were very worn. I bought the gears and a new starter and now it makes a really bad grinding noise and barely turns the motor over. The battery is weak, but I put the charger on it while I am starting it to give it enough amps. I have read that there are some starter clutch issues with this atv, and I just wanted some opinions before I go out and buy a starter clutch and still have the same problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This worries me a little that no one has this problem! Did I get an unfixable ATV?

I've never really heard of such problem yet. How long has this been going on? Just recently?

I have a '92 warrior and it made a real bad clanking noise when i would try to start it. I talked to people with other yamaha atv's and they said when they get old they do that. I believe it is a one way clutch that wears out and makes the clanking noise. like I said mine did it real bad when I had a weak battery. I got a new battery and it was a night and day difference, it didn't fix the clutch ha ha but it made it a lot better. It doesn't sit there and clank when i crank it anymore, it just fires right up. So i would try a new battery but thats just me.

I Figured it out! The shaft that has the gears that connect the starter to the starter clutch slides into a machined hole in the case. My case is cracked where that shaft slides in. I guess when i turn it over, there is enough torque to move the shaft enough so that it doesn't make full contact with he starter and grinds. Now i have to hit eBay for a case and get ready for a serious winter tear down.
