Default Need Help with Big Bear. starter

I picked up a 1987 Big Bear 350 4x4 with reverse.. Has good compression but No Fire. I installed a new coil and spark plug. also installed new CDI.

1. Now I have fire but only with key off and with pull start. When I turn the key to run and pull start it, the spark goes away.??

2. the starter seems to be permanently engage when I use the Pull rope.(I can hear the starter rotating and I can only pull the rope slowly) This type of starter does not have a gear that throws out like a car starter so I am not sure how this is suppose to work. Can someone please explain what happens with the starter once the engine starts?-what keeps the starter from wearing out by the engine spinning it continously?

There is a starter clutch on those and it sounds like it's bad iv never had that happen to me but that sounds like that is what the problem is also as for ur fire problem im not shure sounds like ur key might be bad but that is just a possibility. Hope that helps
