It sounds like the Linkage needs to be adjusted -- this topic has been answered quite a few times and here is my recent reply to it:

have you recently had any front end interaction with immovable objects?
I did this on my kodiak 400 and shortened the bike by a few inches. Because of this, the lingage needed to be shortanted becuase neutral was now forward, reverse was neutral and .... well... there was no reverse... very difficult to get it into any of those as well...
adjusting the linkage is a snap to do with an 8 and a 12 millimeter.
